Home Volunteers Recognized for Their Kindness

The more than 45 volunteers, who contribute over 3,000 hours of time and their talents at St. John’s Home, were recognized last Wednesday, May 4 to close out National Volunteer Month. At a luncheon fit for honoring them complete with pasta primavera, Caesar salad, beef tips, rolls, and many sweet goodies, these dedicated individuals eft know how much they are appreciated.

A program leading in with the quote “How beautiful a day that kindness touches it,” included a blessing by St. John’s Spiritual Care Partner Sarah Culp and words of gratitude by Anne Mc Kenna, St. John’s Foundation Executive Director, and Nate Sweeney, St. John’s Vice President of Skilled Nursing.

Sandy Ferguson, St. John’s Home Volunteer Coordinator, spoke of the St. John’s values and how our volunteers demonstrate them every day through their acts. She noted the many ways our volunteers assist such as transport to chapel services, working in the St. John’s Gift Shop, assisting with activities and events, and being a elder companion.

After the formal ceremony and luncheon, volunteers were asked to share what volunteering gives back to them and the reflections were enlightening:

“I love to interact with people. They are so interesting.”

“I come to bring joy to the residents and have received so much joy in return.”

“The stories they tell are so interesting.”

“It gives you greater meaning.”
