St. John’s Highlights National Nurses Week

May 6- 12 is designated as National Nurses Week to highlight and recognize the important profession of nursing. Nurses provide an imperative role at St. John’s with our residents and other staff members. Recognizing both our residents who are former nurses and our nursing department, we packed a full week of events for relaxation and pampering. This national week celebrated from the American Nurses Association is founded on the belief that Florence Nightingale is the mother of modern nursing practices.

Appearing on FOX 31, “Good Day Rochester,” our own St. John’s Meadows resident Jane Watkin and LPN Quality Assurance Coordinator Terry Fahy talked about their experiences in nursing and the change both have seen over the years. Jane, who started her nursing career in 1943 saw the changes through technology modernization and also the effects of World War II on nursing shortages. Terry is a dedicated St. John’s Home employee, who over her 23 year tenure has seen changes and techniques arise in caring for seniors. See the entire interview by clicking here. 

Terry, who notes the high acuity level of residents moving in explains the importance of long-term nursing care. “People are moving into nursing homes sicker, and more progressed into their diseases,” says Terry. Being able to care and learn for a higher acuity level is something that Terry notes is an unique aspect of the job. Throughout the entire week we are celebrating our nurses in many different ways. Our nurses will refresh with massages, a celebratory tea, a luncheon outing, and an employee appreciation cookie day. Some of these activities are highlighted below.
