Nursing Homes like St. John’s Better Prepared to Contain Spread

As the number of COVID-19 cases increase in other parts of the country and isolated outbreaks continue in long-term care facilities, nursing homes are working to prepare to prevent the possible spread of virus in their own communities.

For St. John’s Home, those preparations have been ongoing. “We’ve treated this entire past summer and start of the fall as if the second wave were already here in the community,” Nate Sweeney, vice president of skilled services at St. John’s, told 13WHAM news. “So it’s about maintaining vigilance at all times.”

In addition to acquiring and stockpiling PPE (personal protective equipment) and changing protocols for dealing with staff positive tests and potential resident quarantines, St. John’s has also employed new technologies to better sanitize resident rooms and common areas. “That is completely different than what things were like at the beginning (of the pandemic),” added Sweeney.
