Former Rehabilitation Guest Shows Fabric Art at St. John’s Home
Featuring the beautiful art of Steena Rickner, St. John’s Home hosted a fabric arts exhibit with live harp music and fall treats. Intricate quilts filled the Community Center as residents and visitors explored the many designs by Rickner, who was present to greet them.
Rickner is no stranger to St. John’s Home. She recently was a guest at St. John’s Rehabilitaion Center for two weeks. She says, “the care was excellent, I had amazing caregivers.” Her “wonderful” stay encouraged her to look into moving to St. John’s Meadows, where she is excited to continue her fabric work.
Though Rickner does not describe herself as an artist, her work would say otherwise. Her many large fabric pieces depict various themes including nature and spirituality, all sewn together like a textile mosaic, many with beaded applicates. She says she started this passion project later in life, beginning to produce quilts in large numbers during the pandemic.
“My husband and I would sing for a living but covid changed my voice, and I always need to be doing something creative, so my friend showed me quilting, I haven’t stopped.”
“I always work with imagination, and that is advice I would give, ‘have imagination,'” says Rickner. She says the creativity and imagination needed by the therapeutic recreation staff at St. John’s Home “to brighten people’s day,” is one of the main reasons she decided to show her work at St. John’s Home.
