St. John’s Sponsors Scam Prevention Series
“Be scam aware” is a phrase that has become important for vigilant older Americans in recent years. This is due to the ongoing growth in scams and identity thefts targeted towards older adults. According to the Federal Trade Commission, 2023 saw a $10 billion loss among older adults — all due to scams.
Why do scammers target older adults? Money. People over 65 typically have more money accumulated in their savings. Scammers also typically corner those they believe to be vulnerable. Memory loss, widowers, or being unfamiliarity with technology are conditions taken advantage of by scammers.
St. John’s is one of the sponsors for a series by Lifespan of Greater Rochester, Fraud and Scams Series for Care Partners. These free, instructional seminars examine — in depth — the many fears, questions, and facts surrounding scamming among the older adult community.
All sessions of the series are held at Brickstone by St. John’s and are open to residents and the greater community with a registration.
