St. John’s Social Workers Shine on Morning Show

St. John’s Elder Advocate Cara Rusinko and Resident Cheri Steron appeared on “Good Day Rochester” Wednesday morning in honor of National Social Work Month.  The two discussed their special bond as social work professionals as well as the story of how they became acquainted with each other on the program with Jennifer Johnson and Norma Holland.

Cheri Steron moved to St. John’s Meadows a year ago after a career as a case manager with Monroe County. While transitioning to St. John’s Meadows, she was also dealing with major health issues facing her husband, Harvey. Cheri moved to her new apartment while Harvey was still in hospital. She was uncertain if he would ever be discharged, and while she had three decades of social work experience, she did not know how to navigate the elder care system.

Cheri and Cara

Enter Cara Rusinko, elder advocate at St. John’s. Harvey was eventually sent to St. John’s Home for rehabilitation, and “Cara turned out to be there.” As Cheri remembers it: “she came to meetings for the transition and helped us get items that would provide for his safety once he came home.”

Happy Social Work Month to social workers everywhere!
