Bright Spot: St. John’s Therapeutic Recreation Team
St. John’s Home Therapeutic Recreation (TR) staff work hard to bring residents moments of joy through meaningful activities.
In observance of National Therapeutic Recreation Week, 13WHAM showcased the dedicated St. John’s Home TR Team on a recent Bright Spot.
This national celebration was started by the National Therapeutic Recreation Society, now the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification, in 1984 as a way to honor TR specialists as well as raise awareness for the career as a whole.
Certified TR professionals, like the ones at St. John’s, use activity-based actions and programming to address the needs of the people with whom they work. Activities include music and art therapy, picnics, games, and more. The people who benefit from therapeutic recreation can vary in age, gender, and ability.
Recently, the St. John’s team has been organizing annual summer picnics and courtyard concerts. These events add variety to the lives of the residents and make for the perfect opportunity for socialization.
Events like the summer picnics appeal to visiting family members as well. Adult children who visit their family members at St. John’s Home can enjoy a nice summer day with their loved ones — some even use the special occasion to bring their own children for a visit to their great grandparents.
