Celebrating over 900 years in total, residents at St. John’s Home were honored at a special luncheon earlier this week. A long standing tradition, the annual Centenarian Luncheon celebrated those ranging in age from 100 to 103. A few residents spoke to  local news channels about what their secrets are to longevity. Dr. Eleanor Feldman Barbera dedicated her most recent “The World According to Dr. El” column in McKnight’s Long-Term Care News to an examination of St. John’s journey to small homes. According to Dr. El:  “Traditional nursing homes can participate in culture change programs with great success if their leadership is committed to the philosophy through the transition period and beyond. They can retrain staff, add plants and pets and remove nursing stations, but the standard long hallways have remained — until now.”

With punch, cookies, and an overflow crowd of residents, Karen Bovee transitioned to her new role as St. John’s Meadows Director of Social Recreation. At the recent “meet and greet,” Karen made her way around from table to table as residents asked questions and chatted amongst one another about upcoming events and outings they would like to see implemented in the near future.

Last spring, longtime St. John’s Meadows resident Art Trimble brought an idea to Paul Bartlett, vice president of senior housing at St. John’s.  The concept involved his wish to turn a small peninsula projecting into a pond near the cottage he shared with his partner Barb Binder into a more suitable area for residents and guests to enjoy. An active contributor to the Rochester Civic Garden Center and the Borrows Audubon Nature Club, Art always made it a priority to take the time to appreciate his natural surroundings and share his insights with others. He even offered to fund the initiative.
