St. John’s and MVP Health Care’s Seasonal Flavors cooking demonstration and educational series kicked off on May 4 featuring Farm-Style Cooking. Recipes included Chicken Mushroom Potpie, Country Potato Salad, and Old-Fashioned Succotash.

Rochester, N.Y. —An innovative workforce development program pioneered by St. John’s has been awarded a grant to help expand even further in 2017. St. John’s will receive $100,000 from the New York State Regional Economic Development Council to put toward training existing employees in new methods aimed at improving care and quality of life for residents of St. John’s.

Bestselling author and comedian Judy Batalion visited Brickstone by St. John’s on Monday to discuss the complexities of mother-daughter relationships and her 2016 book “White Walls: A Memoir About Motherhood, Daughterhood, and the Mess in Between.” Batalion’s appearance was part of the Louis S. Wolk Jewish Community Center of Greater Rochester’s Lane Dworkin Jewish Book Festival.

Brickstone by St. John’s has a dedicated group of volunteers that partner with James P.B. Duffy School #12 in the City of Rochester’s South Wedge neighborhood to help teach kindergarteners and first-graders how to read. The senior citizen volunteers visit every week for 10 weeks during each semester, and hope to ignite a life-long love of reading by relaying just how important the skill is. The intergenerational nature of the program has been one of its greatest draws for the students, and it provides a way for seniors to get and stay engaged with the community.
